Brand Systems for Small Teams: What to Build and What to Skip

Build first: the core five

Logo suite (primary + monochrome), color system (primary + 2 neutrals), typography (one display + one body), social templates, deck template. That's 80% of the value.

Build eventually: the expansion set

Packaging (if physical), motion guidelines (if video-heavy), voice doc (when you hire your first writer), photography direction (when you start shooting).

Skip entirely (for now)

Sonic branding, environmental graphics, merchandise systems, sub-brand architecture. Don't invest here until you're 50+ people or a B2C brand with real retail footprint.

Hosting the system

Notion or Figma, not a PDF. PDFs rot. Living docs stay current. The brand system should be as easy to update as a blog post.
